New or Existing?

Try to first contribute toward books that already exist. Consolidating information into one book is better than having many small, usually incomplete, separate books.

Book Definitions

Definitions provide clarity and direction for individuals contributing. It allows Wikibookians to more easily collaborate toward a coherent body of work. The following pieces of information are suggestions of what to include in book definitions:

Target Audience

This is the group of people who the book is being written for. Instead of identifying potential readers, it may be more productive to specify particular prerequisites (reading list/ background knowledge) for readers. This way, readers will be able to engage with your book at the same level, allowing you to write new and advanced material instead of having to cover background information.

Subject

What topic are you writing about?

Scope and Depth

The scope of the book defines how much of the subject is covered, and the depth defines how many details are discussed.

Books and Communities

If the book does not have active contributors, take the initiative and do what you can to fix the book yourself. If you need to move, delete or replace content in order to improve the book, do not hesitate. If there are other editors contributing, make sure to seek consensus before making any major changes.

Existing Book Community

Wiki is a collaborative environment. Existing contributors have different work schedules, activity levels, and vested interests in the book. Making massive changes to a Wikibook could upset people who have invested their time into getting the book to its current state. Remember to communicate and collaborate. Improve the contributions of others, and be prepared for them to improve your work.

Consensus

Wiki is founded on the idea of emergence. Your ideas combined with the ideas of other editors, will be better than your ideas alone. Keep in mind that the book will be a better resource if more points of view are being represented.

Rewriting a Book

There are some Wikibooks that have been abandoned by their authors. These books have been left at different stages of completion. If you think the existing book is irreparable, you can rewrite the book according to your own vision.

Merging Books

Sometimes, two or more half-completed books can be merged together to form one book that is in much better condition. Sometimes, people may disagree with a merger in which case a consensus needs to be met. To perform a merge, redirect the old pages to the new ones, combine the book content, and ask an administrator to help merge the history pages.
