More Information

Wikinews’ interface is designed to be easy to use and easy to learn. Wikinews not only presents original reports but also provides free, neutral, integrated summaries of the news from other sources. Many news articles comprise of information gaps, which is where the collaborative wiki model plays a large role. It allows original work in the form of original reporting and interviews. Wikinews contributes to a global digital commons by making content freely available for redistribution and use. It can be distinguished from other citizen journalism by its neutral point of view policy. To ensure Wikinews reporting is always fair and reliable, writing and reporting is presented from a neutral point of view and cited, respectively. Wikinews discourages subjective opinion and commentary.

Wikinews articles are not to be mistaken with: press releases, source documents, advertisements, scientific papers, encyclopedia articles and/or editorials.

There are two main kinds of Wikinews articles:

Synthesis articles – articles written using information from other online news sources. Presenting a combination of all available facts from many sources into one unbiased cited article.

Original reporting – involves journalism by Wikinews contributors. By providing first-hand reports of a news event you too can write the news. Ensure that you take detailed notes and present them with your article to support your work.

The Newsroom and Water Cooler are two pages that you will find useful when writing or editing a news article. The Newsroom is the central place where contributors work to develop, edit and collaborate on news topics.  In the Newsroom you will be able to see what is currently being worked on. The Water Cooler is where discussions about technical issues, policies, and operations of Wikinews take place.
