Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM) is an international competition that is run at a national level every September.  This photographic competition encourages every person to participate in and engage with South Africa’s heritage by asking the public to celebrate South Africa’s heritage sites and monuments by taking photographs of them and uploading them to Wikipedia.

Wikimedia South Africa partnered with WikiAfrica to organise and host the competition in collaboration with SAHRA and Heritage Western Cape. During the month of September 2012, the first Wiki Loves Monuments Competition was launched in South Africa at an afternoon get-together at the Slave Church on Long Street (venue sponsored by Heritage Western Cape).

The national competition drew 1861 entries which were  then judged by some of South Africa’s most prominent photographers. The 2013 winners were:

  • 1st Prize McClean Observatory Cape Town by Wimfilmalter

  • 2nd Prize Mosaic walkway at the Donkin Reserve Port by Kay-africa

  • 3rd Prize Swartberg Pass 01 by Chris Snelling

There was a prize for the best photo from the Western Cape (sponsored by Heritage Western Cape), and two prizes for the most uploads as the first and second placed entrants were so close – Roche Pietersen submitted 198 pictures and Rute Martins submitted 180 pictures. The prizes were awarded at a gala dinner at the OR Tambo Premier Hotel on the 17th November 2012.

The international competition was equally successful, with more than 350,000 submissions by more than 15,000 people in 33 countries! What a great result and start to this competition in South Africa. Look out for it in September 2013!
